Our selection of quintessential kosher Pinot Grigio wines offers exciting flavor profiles that are sure to please. California’s Baron Herzog is inspired by nine generations of wine-making expertise dating back to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Today the California winery follows its heritage offering a premium kosher light-bodied Pinot Grigio with pleasing tropical notes.

Our Italian selection includes Cantina Gabriele, a South Pontine winery idyllically situated between the sea and the mountains. This unique climate produces a distinctly citrusy flavor with notes of bright lemon, zesty orange peel, and vibrant grapefruit. Bartenura’s Pinot Grigio grapes are known for forward notes of pear, grapefruit, and honeysuckle, with a crisp finish of green apples. Cantine Del Borgo Reale is a well-balanced Pinot Grigio with a more intense floral bouquet.

History of Pinot Grigio

Tracing back to Burgundy, France, Pinot Grigio likely arrived in Italy in the 14th century via Hungarian monks who acquired the grapes from Switzerland. The grapes are known for their distinct purply gray-hued skin, H3inspiring the name “Grigio,” meaning gray in Italian. Also known as Pinot Gris, it is an early budding and ripening grape that grows well in cooler climates. Italian regions known for their Pinot Grigio wines include Trentino-Alto Adige, Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli, and Lombardy. However, it is also produced at wineries in Alsace, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, and the Oregon and California U.S. wine regions.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that dry, premium-quality kosher wines like Pinot Grigio appeared on the market following the rejuvenation of the Israeli wine industry. However, today, the emerging kosher wine micro-genre is driven by a growing interest in the quality associated with the meticulous kosher process. As a result, the kosher wine symbol is the mark of quality Pinot Grigio in the eyes of kosher wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Flavor Description

Pinot Grigio is a dry, light-bodied white wine with a delightful fruity, citrusy aroma. Flavors of vibrant lemon with delicate notes ranging from subtle honeysuckle to peach make it a pleasant choice for sipping or entertaining. Pinot Grigio’s most prominent flavors lean towards lemon and apple, with fruity yet dry notes of orchard and stone fruits like peach and pear. The fruitiness is more crisp than sweet and can often be melon-forward with subtle tropical, floral, or even slightly spicy notes. But there is more to this wine than its fruity aspects, with unexpected flavors of straw and a salty minerality. The terroir and timing of the harvest influence Pinot Grigio flavor profiles. The later the harvest and the cooler the terroir, the more fruit-forward the flavor.

Food Pairings

Pinot Grigio is perfectly paired with:

  • Chicken and seafood
  • Light pasta dishes sans white or red sauces
  • Nutty cheeses like Gruyere and Manchego
  • Risotto
  • Non-vinegary salads

Avoid serving Pinot Grigio with high-acidic foods, heavy cream, or tomato-dominant dishes, as they overpower the wine’s bright, citrusy flavor.

Aging Recommendations

White wines are intended to be enjoyed within two to three years of the grapes’ harvest time. Although Pinot Grigios can maintain their flavor when stored properly, the taste will not improve with age. To make the most of your Pinot Grigio, always store it in a dark, dry place with a consistent temperature between 55° to 69°F. Chill it for about two hours, and let it sit out for 15 minutes before serving. Ideally, it should be served between 45°to 49°F to bring out the brightest notes and enhance its floral, fruity flavors.
